Worldcoin’s Global Odyssey: Navigating Expansion, Challenges, and Identity in the Crypto Realm
Worldcoin has expanded its support for integrations with various platforms, including Minecraft, Reddit, Telegram, Shopify, and Mercado Libre. The project, which launched publicly four months ago, recently unveiled World ID 2.0, designed to enhance the differentiation between bots and “verified humans” online.
According to Tiago Sada, head of product for Tools for Humanity and a core contributor to Worldcoin, the updated protocol simplifies the integration process for developers, offering a more streamlined way to build connections. The new integrations enable functionalities such as Reddit moderators granting special permissions to users with World ID, enhancing trust and reducing spam.
Recent Milestones
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is reaffirming his commitment to the cryptocurrency project Worldcoin, amid recent reports that the company is in the process of seeking $50 million in funding. Emphasizing his vision, Altman envisions Worldcoin as a platform aimed at establishing a global identity and financial network. The project has gained significant traction, with over 2.6 million individuals opting to undergo iris scans using Worldcoin’s “orb” devices, receiving a digital ID and complimentary cryptocurrency in return.
Altman’s statements came during a virtual Q&A session hosted by fintech-focused investment bank FT Partners. This event occurred a week after crypto news outlet The Block reported that Tools For Humanity, the entity behind Worldcoin, was actively pursuing a $50 million fundraising initiative. Notably, the funding drive involves selling the project’s crypto tokens at a discounted rate, as outlined by The Block. Altman’s continued support underscores the significance he places on Worldcoin’s potential impact in reshaping identity and financial systems globally.

Three new types of World IDs
Worldcoin has introduced three levels of World IDs, catering to different user preferences and security needs. The “casual” or “World ID device level” allows users to create a World ID through the Worldcoin app without the need for iris scanning, offering a convenient profile creation process. The “standard” or “World ID Orb” level involves both profile creation and iris scanning using Worldcoin’s Orb devices for identity verification.
For enhanced security, the “high” or “World ID Orb+” level adds facial recognition as an additional step. Notably, World ID creation does not mandate the provision of real names or identification, offering users the option of complete anonymity. While it’s not foolproof, as users can create multiple World IDs until scanned by an Orb, this approach can mitigate abuses like multiple votes or the creation of numerous accounts.
Expansion Plans
Worldcoin is actively expanding its onboarding operations in Mexico and Singapore, with plans to extend its presence to more countries in Asia in the future. While facing challenges, including a ban in Kenya over data security concerns, the cryptocurrency project remains resilient. Critics have raised concerns about its focus on developing countries, offering 25 WLD tokens (valued at approximately $60.5) to participants outside the U.S. and select countries for signing up.
Despite these issues, Worldcoin has achieved significant growth, boasting almost 5 million global users with a World ID and 2.6 million individuals using its Orb hardware for iris scanning. In the last week alone, over 100,000 new accounts were created. Tiago Sada, head of product for Tools for Humanity, acknowledges that there’s still a long way to go, but the focus in 2024 is on continuous improvement and expanding Worldcoin’s reach globally.
